Blocker is best known for playing Hoss Cartwright on the TV series Bonanza from 1959 to 1972. From 1958 to 1959, he played Tiny Budinger on the television series Cimarron City. Blocker has also appeared on TV series Colt .45, Wagon Train, Have Gun – Will Travel, The Thin Man, Gunsmoke, Zorro, Maverick, The Restless Gun, The Bob Newhart Show, The Red Skelton Hour, and more. In 1970, he won the Western Heritage Award for the fictional TV series “Bonanza.” He has four children, including actor Dirk Blocker and producer David Blocker. Dan Blocker died of a pulmonary embolism on May 13, 1972, at the age of 43. Blocker owned several mansions at the time of his death, including a 5,000-square-foot house in Los Angeles’ Hancock Park district that is occupied today by rock star Rob Zombie. Malibu has a famous beach, “Dan Block Beach”. The waterfront property was co-owned by actors Michael Langdon and Lorne Green in the 1970s. Landon and Greene donated the land to California in 1979 and named the beach after their late friend Dan Blocker. In 1995, the state of California donated this and several others to Los Angeles County.
