early life
Dan Bilzerian was born on December 7, 1980 in Tampa Bay, Florida. Dan’s father, Paul Birzerian, was a prominent private equity/acquisition specialist in the 1980s. Dan is of Armenian descent through his father. By the time Paul Bilzerian was 36, he had made $40 million from nothing. Unfortunately, in 1988, Paul was indicted for tax and security fraud. Dan was eight years old at the time. The older Bilzerian declared bankruptcy in 2001, claiming only $15,000 in assets and more than $140 million in debt. Dan’s mother’s name was Terri Stephen. Dan has a brother named Adam who is a poker player. In their heyday, the family lived in Tampa’s largest home, a 28,000-square-foot mansion with 10 bedrooms. The house was foreclosed on in 2016 after Paul moved to the Caribbean to escape arrest. Before their father was charged, he reportedly set up a trust for Dan and Adam. It’s unclear how much of those funds contributed to Dan’s lavish lifestyle today, or if any of those funds may have been ill-gotten in what Paul called tax and security fraud.
Dan Birzerian’s Early Career
Dan joined the Navy in 1999. In 2000, Bilzerian continued his SEAL training and completed two hellish training weeks, but was kicked out of the program a few weeks before graduation after a disagreement with one of his administrators. The disagreement reportedly involved a safety violation over the scope of the firearm. After leaving the Navy, Dan attended the University of Florida, majoring in criminology and business.
Poker career
Dan started playing professional poker in 2009 at the age of 29. He finished 180th in the 2009 World Series of Poker Main Event. This would become his most successful officially sanctioned poker event. His winnings are a whopping $36,000. Today, Dan is considered a very good poker player. Although he has received relatively little official professional cash at sanctioned events, he claims to have won millions or even tens of millions in private events. In 2011, after Rudman was jailed, Dan and ten other celebrities were ordered to repay their winnings with Ponzi artist Bradley Rudman. They were asked to repay the money to help pay off the victims Ruderman stole during his criminal career. That same year, Dan publicly defended Alex Rodriguez against allegations of illegal gambling by Alex.
In one particularly legendary event, Dan reportedly won $12.8 million. A $10.8 million heads-up, no-limit hold’em game with stakes ranging from $5,000 to $10,000. Immediately after winning, he flew to Mexico on a private jet to celebrate. In 2014 alone, he claimed to have won $50 million in poker winnings. He also lost more than $3 million on at least three separate occasions. He was named “The Funniest Poker Player on Twitter” by Bluff Magazine and is the co-founder of Victory Poker.

Legal Issues
Bilzerian eventually sued the producer of Lone Survivor, complaining that he lent the company $1 million in exchange for at least eight minutes of screen time and 80-word dialogue. In the final version of the film, his character ends in less than a minute with just a short line of dialogue. His lawsuit seeks $1.2 million, or 20% of his original loan amount. It was later dropped due to Dan getting so much publicity on the issue, and he still reportedly ended up making $1.5 million due to the success of the film.
In August 2014, Dan was suspended from a Miami nightclub for kicking model Vanessa Castano in the face during an argument. Dan said Vanessa and another woman attacked his girlfriend. Castano is suing Dan for $1 million for her injuries.
Later that year, Dan was involved in a lawsuit with porn actress Janice Griffith. He reportedly threw her from the roof into the swimming pool as part of a photo shoot for Hustler. However, when she missed the pool and hit the edge, her foot broke. She asked Bilzerian for $85,000 for her injuries, but he refused. Griffith then filed suit against Hustler and Bilzerian.
That same month, in December, Bilzerian was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport on a bomb-making charge. His charges were dropped and he was released the same day. In February 2015, Dan pleaded guilty to a charge of “negligence not to fire the fire in the open”. He was fined $17, $231.

In August 2018, Dan flew to Armenia with his brother Adam and father Paul to take the oath of Armenian citizenship. While he was there, he visited a shooting range and fired the weapon. The Azerbaijani government sent a note of protest to the US State Department. A Baku court issued an arrest warrant for Bilzerian and placed him on an internationally wanted list.
Dan attended the October 1, 2017 Las Vegas mass shooting. He took several videos of himself that night and posted them to his Instagram. In the first video, he is seen fleeing to safety. In the second video he uploaded, he said “have to go get the gun. I’m going to fucking go back”; however, in his last video, he was on his way home when he was seen saying ” I don’t think there’s anything I can do about it.” There was a lot of media debate about his decision that night.

Dan has lived in Hollywood Hills, Bel Air and Las Vegas for most of the past decade. For tax purposes, Dan’s primary residence is Las Vegas, Nevada. In 2014, he bought a five-bedroom home in Summerlin South for $4.1 million. He sold that house in 2017 for $5.1 million and then bought a new one nearby for $10 million. In 2018, Dan rented an absolutely massive, four-story, 12-bedroom Bel Air mansion for $50,000 a month. He previously spent $39,000 a month renting his own house in the Hollywood Hills. In his new mansion, he aimed to create the feel of a nightclub, complete with a two-lane bowling alley, a wine cellar, a movie theater, a sports room and five bars.
