Early life and education
Dan Auerbach was born in Akron, Ohio, in 1979, the son of French teacher Marie and antique dealer Charles. He is partly Isle of Man on his mother’s side and Polish-Jewish on his father’s side. Auerbach first became interested in blues music when he was young after listening to his father’s old vinyl records. He was also influenced by his mother’s musical background, especially his uncle, a bluegrass musician. As a teenager, Auerbach attended Firestone High School, where he captained the football team. He went on to attend the University of Akron, but dropped out to pursue guitar and his music career.
Black Keys Part 1
As a child, Auerbach was friends with Patrick Carney, a boy from the Akron community. The two went to high school together and began playing music in 1996. Auerbach and Carney founded the blues rock band Black Keys in 2001 after dropping out of Akron University. They then signed with independent label Alive and released their album. 2002’s debut album “The Big Come Up”. This earned them a new record deal with Fat Possum Records, who released their next studio album, Thickfreakness. In 2004, Black Keys’ popularity increased with the release of their third album, Rubber Factory. As a result, they signed a recording deal with major label Nonesuch Records in 2006. Black Keys went on to release albums “Magic Potion” and “Attack & Release,” the latter marking the first of their many collaborations with the producer, Dangerous Rats. The album peaked at number 14 on the Billboard 200.
In 2010, Black Keys achieved a commercial breakthrough with the album Brothers. In addition to peaking at number three on the Billboard 200, it spawned the hit single “Tighten Up,” which peaked at number one on the Alternative Songs chart for ten weeks. The album spawned another successful single, titled “Howlin’ for You”. As a result, “Brothers” went on to win three Grammys, including Best Alternative Album of the Year. The Black Keys achieved this success with their 2011 hit album “El Camino,” which peaked at number two on the Billboard 200 and led to the band’s first arena tour. In addition, its lead single “Lonely Boy” became the group’s highest-charting single in many countries, including the United States and Canada. At the 55th Grammy Awards, “El Camino” won Best Rock Album, while “Lonely Boy” won Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song.

Black Keys Part 2
The Black Keys continued their incredible success in 2014 with the release of their eighth album “Turn Blue”. When it debuted in the US, Canada and Australia, it topped the charts for the band’s debut album in those countries. After the album tour, Auerbach and Carney decided they needed to break free from the Black Keys. They took a five-year hiatus and returned in 2019 with the album Let’s Rock. Its singles include “Go,” “Eagle Birds” and “Lo/Hi,” the latter of which topped multiple Billboard charts simultaneously. In 2021, Black Keys releases “Delta Kream,” which includes a cover of a blues song with guitarist Kenny Brown and bassist Eric Deaton.
Other Bands and Projects
Before forming the Black Keys, Auerbach was a member of the Barnburners, a blues band that played in clubs in northeastern Ohio. They also released a six-track album called “The Rawboogie EP”. Later, Auerbach collaborated with Carney and Damon Dash on the album “Blakroc”, which included guest appearances by artists such as Mos Def, Jim Jones, RZA and Ludacris.
In 2015, Auerbach formed the garage rock band The Arcs; that year, they released their debut album, Yours, Dreamily. Among his other projects, Auerbach collaborated with blues musician Robert Finley to release an original soundtrack for the graphic novel The Ballad of Murder.
Solo career and relaxing eye sounds
Auerbach released his debut solo album “Keep it Hid” in 2009. Tracks from the album appeared on the show “Peaky Blinders” and the movie “Up in the Air”.
Auerbach owns a recording studio called Easy Eye Sound in Nashville, Tennessee, and also owns the record label of the same name. The label’s first release was Auerbach’s solo album “Waiting on a Song”, which was released in 2017. Other versions of the label include “Goin’ Platinum!” and Robert Finley’s “Son of the Tenant.” In addition, Auerbach has produced records of the likes of Lana Del Rey, Cage the Elephant, CeeLo Green and Ray LaMontagne. In 2008, Auerbach married his first wife, Stephanie Goness; they had a daughter, Sadie, and divorced in 2013. Auerbach then married Jane Goodall in 2015. They have a son named Early, who lives in Nashville.
