The 14th Dalai Lama is a Tibetan political leader, religious figure and Nobel Peace Prize winner. He was born in Lhamo Dondrub, Taktser, Tibet, under the religious name Tenzin Gyatso. He was officially recognized as the 14th Dalai Lama in 1939 and assumed power in Tibet in 1950. Gyatso fled to India during the 1959 Tibetan uprising. While in China, he established an alternative government, hoping that the Chinese government would live in peace with Tibet. He has since traveled the world advocating for Tibetans and teaching Buddhism. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989.
