John Schnatter is an American entrepreneur and the founder, chairman and CEO of Papa John’s International, Inc. He will step down as the company’s CEO in January 2018. John H. Schnatter was born on November 22, 1961 in Jeffersonville, Indiana. His father Robert (died 1985) was a judge and his mother Mary Beth was a real estate agent. He has two younger siblings, Anne and Charles. Schnitter attended Jeffersonville High School, followed by Ball State University. He graduated in 1983 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.

Schnatter worked at several pizzerias, including Rocky’s, and later at Greek’s Pizzeria. His first venture was as the co-owner of his father’s bistro “Mick’s Lounge”. The restaurant and sports lounge is located at Gateway Plaza in Jeffersonville, Indiana. The Papa John’s Pizza restaurant chain was established in 1984. Schnatter founded the pizza company in a small remodeled space behind Mick’s Lounge. He raised the start-up capital by selling the Camaro Z28 in 1972. He used part of the money to buy old restaurant equipment worth $1,600. Papa John’s is now one of the world’s largest takeaway and pizza delivery franchisees. Schnitter appeared in several TV commercials for Papa John’s alongside NFL quarterback Peyton Manning. The slogan of Papa John’s Pizza is “Better ingredients. Better pizza.”. The company also sponsors the Super Bowl.
In December 2017, Schnatter announced that he would resign as CEO of Papa John’s Pizza. He will continue to serve as chairman of the company. The role of CEO will fall to COO Steve Ritchie. Two months after publicly criticizing the NFL’s leadership in player protests against the national anthem, he gave up his position.
