He was born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1969, and his original name was William Christopher Swinney (William Christopher Swinney). From 1990 to 1992, Dubbo played college football as a wide receiver near Crimson Tide University at the University of Alabama.
Swinney’s coaching career began in 1993 as a graduate assistant in Alabama. Three years later, Crimson Tide promoted him to the team’s wide receiver and close-end coach. From 2001 to 2003, he left the sidelines to work as a real estate developer in his hometown.

On August 25, 2017, Dubbo and Clemson signed an 8-year $54 million contract. This breaks down to approximately $6.75 million per year and will keep him on the team until 2024. If either party wants to move in a new direction, the contract also comes with a $6 million buyout clause.
