Curly Howard was born in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, New York in October 1903 and died in January 1952. Howard is best known as a member of the American slapstick comedy team “The Three Stooges”.
The three Stooges feature Curly and his older brothers Mo Howard and Shep Howard and actor Larry Finn. Curly is the most popular of the Stooges, known for his high-pitched voice and vocal expression as well as his physical comedy and athleticism. Howard, who was not trained as an actor, borrowed his “woob woob” phrase from comedian Hugh Herbert. From 1933 to 1947, Howard held more than 120 acting credits. He starred in the movies Reverse the Clock, Broadway Hollywood, Meet the Baron, The Dancing Lady, Mert and Maggie, Runaway Lovers, Hollywood Party, Captain Hate the Sea, Start Cheering, Time Out for Rhythm, My Sister Eileen, Rockin’ in the Rockies, the rocking parade of 1946, stop! Look! and laugh! In 1983, Howard was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 1560 Vine Street with Larry and Mo. He suffered a severe stroke and a second stroke left him partially paralyzed and in a wheelchair. Curly Howard died on January 18, 1952, at the age of 48.
