Colin Powell is an American politician and a member of the Republican Party. He was the first African-American to serve as a joint meeting of the U.S. Secretary of State and Chiefs of Staff. He is also a retired four-star U.S. Army general. Powell was born on April 5, 1937 in Manhattan, New York. His parents were Maude and Luther. He has an older sister named Marilyn. Powell grew up in the Bronx and he attended Morris High School. He graduated from the City College of New York with a degree in geology in 1958. He received an MBA degree from George Washington University in 1971.

Powell served in the U.S. Army for 35 years from 1958 to 1993. It all started when he was appointed as the commander of the reserve officer training team in college. Powell first served in the US Army in 1958 as a second lieutenant. He served during the Vietnam War, the invasion of Panama, and the Persian Gulf War. His military medals include the Meritorious Legion Medal, the Purple Heart Medal and the Bronze Star Medal. Powell has twice won the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He was first awarded by President George HW Bush in 1991 and again by President Bill Clinton in 1993.
Powell served as a national security adviser during the Reagan administration (1987-89). He was appointed chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in 1987 and served until 1989. His military method of resolving conflicts is called “Powell Doctrine.” It recommends the use of extreme force to reduce casualties. Powell succeeded Madeleine Albright as the 65th Secretary of State of the United States in 2001. He served under President George W. Bush until his retirement in 2005. Powell supported Senator Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential campaign.
