What is Clinton Portis’ Net Worth and Career Earnings?
Clinton Portis is a retired American football player with a net worth of negative $5 million. Clinton Portis is best known for his time with the Washington Redskins, where he served as the starting running back for seven seasons. Clinton Portis earned $43 million during his NFL stint. Unfortunately, he encountered various financial and legal problems after retirement.
Mississippi-born Portis began his football career at the University of Miami, where he became the second freshman to start running back. Portis set a school freshman record with five 100-yard plays. However, his sophomore season was not as successful and his job was lost by a teammate named James Jackson. In 2001, Portis fought back and led the team to a national championship. A year later, Portis was selected by the Denver Broncos in the second round of the 2002 NFL draft.

At 22, Portis became the youngest player to reach five touchdowns in a game. Before the 2004 season, Portis was traded to the Redskins, who offered him an eight-year deal worth $50.5 million. During the 2006 season, Portis broke the Redskins record for most rushing yards in a single season (1,516 yards), making him the third player in league history to rush for more than 1,500 yards in three seasons. Additionally, during the 2008 season, Portis (along with OJ Simpson) became the only player in history to rush at least 120 yards in five straight games. However, it all ended abruptly when he suffered multiple injuries, which led to his departure from the Redskins in 2011.
Financial Problems and Bankruptcy
When the injuries are all said and done, Clinton Portis has earned a total of $43.1 million in salary during his NFL career. Unfortunately, the money was completely wiped out due to bad investments overseen by financial advisors. It got so bad that Portis later explained that he planned to murder his former advisers, who squandered his millions. To be fair, Portis admitted that some of his property was lost due to poor gambling habits and general recklessness.
Clinton lost $8 million in a failed casino venture. He put another $2 million into a wealth management firm, which turned out to be a Ponzi scheme. He reportedly did not pay his taxes ($401,432.18 owed to the IRS since 2006 and another $57,187.61 since 2010). In his bankruptcy filing, he lists another $175,000 in auto loans (three cars) and $412,000 in unpaid child support.
For some reason, he owes Entertainment Tonight reporter and former sideline reporter Nischelle Turner $500,000, and he even lists his mother as one of his creditors (he also owes her $500,000).
In December 2015, Clinton filed for bankruptcy, listing $5 million in personal debt.
federal indictment
In December 2019, the U.S. Department of Justice indicted Clinton and several other former NFL players for stealing money from the league’s health care program. Portis and other players allegedly submitted false claims to the program for compensation. They were allegedly reimbursed for expensive and unnecessary items such as hyperbaric oxygen chambers and ultrasound machines.
In August 2021, a Florida court ordered Clinton’s arrest for failing to pay $1,937 a month in child support. He reportedly owes $147,000, plus interest on child support.
