In 1995, he was selected by the Chicago Cubs with the fourth overall pick in the amateur draft. Next, he played three years in the minor leagues before rising to fame. He was just a 20-year-old rookie in 1998 when he had 20 strikeouts in a pushback against the Houston Astros. According to some, Wood’s feat may be the greatest single-game pitching performance in MLB history. As a result, he became the co-holder of the MLB record for strikeouts in a single game (20) and earned the nickname Kid K.
