Gable started out as a stage actor and appeared in silent films in the mid-1920s. In 1931, he landed a supporting role at MGM, and in 1932, he landed his first major role in Hollywood as Ned Durrell in the film Strange Interlude. Clark was the lead actor in more than 60 major films in the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s. Gable is best known for his role as Rhett Butler in the 1939 film Gone With the Wind. For this role, he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor. He was also nominated for the award for the 1935 film Mutiny on the Bounty and won for The One Night Stand in 1934. Clark’s other popular films include Red Dust, Manhattan Melodrama, San Francisco, Saratoga, Boom Town, Hawker, Homecoming and Misfits. He was featured 16 times on Quigley Publishing’s annual Top 10 Money-Making Stars list and earned the equivalent of $100 million today. Clarke worked with Joan Crawford in eight films, Manalloy in seven films, Joan Harlow in six films, Lana Turner four, Norma Shearer and Ai Va Gardner each three. Clark starred in their last film in 1961 with Marilyn Monroe. The Motion Picture Association of America named Gable the 7th greatest actor of all time. Gable received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960. Clark was married five times. His wives are (in order) Josephine Dillon, Rhea Langham, Carole Lombard, Lady Sylvia Ashley and Kay Spreckels. Clark has two children.
Clark Gable died of coronary thrombosis on November 16, 1960, at the age of 59.
