William Clark Gable was born in Cadiz, Ohio in February 1901. He died in November 1960. He is often referred to as the King of Hollywood, or simply The King.
Gable started out as a stage actor and appeared in silent films in the mid-1920s. In 1931, he landed a supporting role at MGM, and in 1932, he landed his first major role in Hollywood as Ned Durrell in the film Strange Interlude. Clark was the lead actor in more than 60 major films in the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s. Gable is best known for his role as Rhett Butler in the 1939 film Gone With the Wind. Clark’s other popular films include Red Dust, Manhattan Melodrama, San Francisco, Saratoga, Boom Town, Hawker, Homecoming and Misfits. He was featured 16 times on Quigley Publishing’s annual Top 10 Money-Making Stars list and earned the equivalent of $100 million today. Clarke worked with Joan Crawford in eight films, Manalloy in seven films, Joan Harlow in six films, Lana Turner four, Norma Shearer and Ai Va Gardner each three. Clark starred in their last film in 1961 with Marilyn Monroe. The Motion Picture Association of America named Gable the 7th greatest actor of all time. Gable received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960. Clark was married five times.
