origin
City Girls is a hip-hop duo from Miami, Florida. The duo consisted of Jatavia Shakara Johnson (JT) and Caresha Romeka Brownlee (Yung Miami). They are currently signed with Quality Control Music. In 2017, they released their first single “F*ck Dat N*gga”, which attracted public attention. The anti-bankruptcy boy national anthem boosted their careers and connected them with music executives. JT was born on December 3, 1992 in Liberty City, Miami, Florida. Her pair of Yung Miami was born on February 11, 1994 in Opaloka, Miami, Florida.
Both grew up in rugged cities and faced obstacles in the early days. In 2010, when they were still a teenager, they met in middle school. Their mothers liked the rich and had a major influence on their growth; this fact became obvious in their lyrics. The city girl started recording after a dispute with other women. They contacted the producer and friend MajorNine and purchased a beat. The tracks that were supposed to be female diss became a boycott of bankrupt boys. JT grew up listening to the gospel, and her partner listened to Trina and Jacki-O.
Profession
In August 2017, City Girls recorded their single “F*ck Dat N*gga”. This vulgar song that promotes women’s independence is adapted from Khia’s 2002 hit single “My Neck My Back”. Soon after the release, their career came to an abrupt end due to JT’s arrest for credit card fraud. Rong Miami faces the task of pushing the track alone. She strategically promotes the song by sharing the song on her Instagram account and recommending performances to the club’s DJ.
When JT was detained, the song became popular. After she was released on bail, city girls began to be booked frequently. Their rapid ascent under the radar caught the attention of future manager Stanley Garbart. In turn, he linked them to K, the executive coach of Quality Control Music. Although reluctant at first, they finally reached an agreement with the record company in December 2017.
In January 2018, City Girls released the official music video of their popular single. The track went viral on the Internet, exposing budding rap singers. Later that year, the song appeared in the “Quality Control: Control Street Volume 1” project. The compilation debuted on Billboard’s R&B/Hip Hop charts and ranked No. 5 in the Billboard 200. In May, they released their first album “Period”. The project was spearheaded by the singles “Tighten Up”, “I’ll Take Your Man” and “Where The Bag At”.
In one of City Girls’ biggest collaborations to date, they collaborated with Canadian music mogul Drake to produce the hit single “In My Feelings”. This song appeared on his fifth studio album “Scorpion” released in June 2018. The song became the best on the album and ranked first on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. There was no sign of retreat, the two received a lot of exposure and got an excellent opportunity for promotion.
As JT had to surrender to fulfill her sentence, their careers once again took a back seat. Initially facing 10 years in prison, she accepted the plea agreement and received 24 months in prison. She is scheduled to be released in March 2020. After she was sentenced, Rong Miami continued to hold on to the fortress. In November 2018, their second album “Girl Code” appeared on the airwaves. The project features Cardi B, Lil Baby and Jacquees. Outstanding tracks include “Twerk”, “Season” and “Act Up”.
In January 2019, City Girls released a music video of “Twerk”. It immediately spread to more than 8 million streaming media in just one day. In May 2019, they released the “Act Up” music video. As of October 2019, these visual effects have been viewed more than 38 million times on YouTube. Both of these tracks will be on the Billboard’s popular R&B/Hip-Hop song chart. In early October 2019, JT was released from prison early. She gave up her latest single “JT First Day Out” without hesitation.
