Chyna is a former professional wrestler, actress and bodybuilder. She was born Joan Marie Laurer on December 27, 1969, in Rochester, New York. Her parents are Joseph and Janet Lawler. She has two siblings, Kathy and Sonny. Chyna attended Penfield High School, followed by the University of Tampa. She graduated in 1992 with a degree in Spanish Literature. She joined the Peace Corps after graduation and was assigned to Guatemala. Once upon a time, she worked as a waitress, belly dancer and chatline worker.
Profession
Chyna started her wrestling career in the mid-1990s. She trained at Wladek “Killer” Kowalski’s wrestling school and competed in her first bout in 1995. Two years later, Chyna made her WWF debut in 1997 at In Your House 13: Final Four. Known as the “Ninth Wonder of the World”, she is a member of D-Generation X. In 1999, Chyna became the first woman to compete in the Royal Rumble. She went on to win two WWF Intercontinental Championships and one WWF Women’s Championship. Chyna left wrestling in 2001, but returned briefly to New Japan Pro Wrestling (2002) and Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (2011).
One of Chyna’s earliest TV roles was on the 1996 episode of Pacific Blue. In 2000, she played the role of Janice on the sitcom “The Third Rock From the Sun.” That same year, she appeared on The Howard Stern Show. Chyna starred in the fourth season of the reality series Surreal. Other appearances include the shows My Fair Brady and Celebrity Rehab, and the films Just Another Romantic Wrestling Comedy and Cougar Club (2007).
