Pagano was a graduate assistant in Southern California from 1984 to 1985, and then in Miami in 1986. He was a linebacker coach at Boise State University from 1987 to 1988 and then a defensive backs coach at East Carolina State in 1989. From 1990 to 1991, he served as the linebacker coach and defensive coordinator for defensive back UNLV. From 1992 to 1994, Pagano was a defensive back and linebacker coach at East Carolina State. He returned to Miami, where he worked as a defensive back and special teams coach from 1995 to 2000. Pagano worked his way up to the NFL, where he served as a secondary coach from 2001 to 2004 with the Cleveland Browns. From 2005 to 2006, he was the Oakland Raiders’ defensive backs coach. He returned to college in 2007 as North Carolina’s defensive coordinator. From 2008 to 2011, he coached the Baltimore Ravens, where he worked with the middle school and served as the defensive coordinator. In 2012, Pagano got his first head coaching job with the Indianapolis Colts. Chuck’s brother, John Pagano, is the defensive coordinator for the San Diego Chargers. Chuck battled cancer in 2012 and inspired the CHUCKSTRONG movement.
