After leaving Blakey, he formed his own small band again and produced an album that was a huge success for him. Mangione began to make more use of his flute, eventually abandoning the trumpet altogether in favor of a more rounded instrument. He became an international star with the hit singles “Feels So Good” and “Land Of Make Believe”. The former hit the top 5 on the US pop chart in 1978, while the album of the same name climbed to No. 2 on the Billboard 200. After a long absence from the public eye, he would return to the stage in the late ’90s, later recording for Chesky Records.
