Chuck Berry is an American guitarist, singer and songwriter. He is one of the pioneers of rock music, and his contribution to rhythm and blues makes rock music more unique. Charles Edward Anderson Berry was born on October 18, 1926 in St. Louis, Missouri. His father Henry was a contractor and deacon, and his mother Martha was a principal. He has five brothers and sisters, Henry, Selma, Lucy, Paul and Martha. Berry attended Sumner High School in St. Louis. Arrested and imprisoned for armed robbery in 1944. In 1947, he was released on his 21st birthday.

Berry worked in an automobile factory before becoming a musician. He started playing music when he was in high school. He also studied guitar with local jazz musician Ira Harris. Berry’s early influences include legendary blues guitarist T-Bone Walker. By 1953, he was performing with the Johnny Johnson and Sir John Trio. The band is known for playing blues and folk songs, but Berry was able to introduce a small country into it. They performed in several venues, the most famous being the Cosmopolitan nightclub in East St. Louis.
Berry signed with Chess Records and released the single “Maybellene” in July 1955. The song was number one on the Billboard R&B charts, with more than one million copies sold. Berry followed with the hit singles “Roll Over, Beethoven” and “Too Much Monkey Business”. His first studio album After School Session was released in May 1957. Other early album releases include One Dozen Berrys (1958), Rockin’ at the Hops (1960) and New Juke Box Hits (1961). Berry was convicted under the Mann Act in 1961. He served 20 months in prison and was released in October 1963. Berry continued his music career and composed songs such as “Nadine”, “You Can Never Tell” and “Promised Land”. His last studio album Rock It was released by Atco Records in 1979.
