Chuck Barris is an American game show host, television producer, songwriter and author. He created the game shows The Dating Game, The Newlyweds Game and hosted The Gong Show. His autobiography, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, was used in George Clooney’s 2002 film. Charles Hirsch Barris was born on June 3, 1929 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His parents are Edith and Nathaniel. He graduated from Dressel University in 1953.

Barris began his television career at NBC in the early 1960s. He was fired for a year and then got a job at ABC. There, he worked backstage at American Bandstand, a musical performance show. He worked with Dick Clark and soon got a full-time job in daytime television. In 1965, Barris started his own production company, Chuck Barris Productions. He created “The Dating Game” and sold the pilot episode to ABC. The show was hosted by Jim Langer and ran on ABC from 1965 to 1973.
Barris launched the game show “The Newlyweds Game” in 1966. It features newlyweds coming face to face to see how well they know their partner. Other shows include “Family Games,” “How Is Your Mother-in-Law?” and “Parents Games.” In 1976, Barris produced and hosted “The Gong Show” on NBC. The show ran from June 1976 to September 1989 with 501 episodes.
In addition to television, Barris is a songwriter and writer. He is best known for the 1962 single “Palisades Park”. It was recorded and performed by rocker Freddie Cannon. Other notable songs include “Summertime Guy” by Eddie Rambeau and “Love Sickness” by Milton DeLugg. Barris’ first book, You and My Baby, was published in 1974. His 1984 autobiography, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, was adapted into a 2002 film starring Sam Rockwell, Julia Roberts and Drew Barrymore. It also marks actor George Clooney’s directorial debut. Other Barris publications include The Game Show King (1993), Bad Grass Never Dies (2004) and Della: A Memoir of My Daughter (2010).
