Christopher Wray is a U.S. attorney and former Assistant Attorney General in the Criminal Division. In June 2017, he was nominated by President Donald Trump to be the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Christopher Asher Wray was born on December 17, 1966 in Provincetown, Massachusetts. His father, Cecil, was a lawyer, and his mother, Gilda, was a program manager at the Charles Hayden Foundation. The foundation provides financial support to youth in the Boston and New York area. Ray attended Phillips College in Massachusetts, followed by Yale University in Connecticut. He completed his JD degree in 1992. He also served as executive editor of the Yale Law Journal during his college days.

Profession
After law school, Ray clerked for Judge J. Michael Luttig of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. He then moved to Atlanta, Georgia, and began private practice. Wray served as Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia from 1997 to 2001. He joined the Department of Justice in 2001 as Deputy Solicitor General and later as Principal Deputy Solicitor General.

Wray was nominated by President George W. Bush in 2003 to be Assistant Attorney General in the Criminal Division. He held that position until 2005, under Deputy Attorney General James Comey. In 2005, he received the Edmund J. Randolph Award for his service. Wray returned to private practice in late 2005. He joined the law firm King & Spalding as a litigation partner. During his tenure, he served as Gov. Chris Christie’s personal attorney in the Bridgegate scandal. Wray was nominated by President Donald Trump on June 7, 2017 to be Director of the FBI. His nomination is awaiting Senate confirmation.

Christopher Wray married college sweetheart “Helen Garrison Howell” in August 1989. The couple first met at Yale University. Helen is from Atlanta, Georgia. They have two children, Caroline and Tripp.
