Curtis’s most famous works include Bud, Not Buddy and The Watson Go to Birmingham – 1963. After graduating high school, he joined Suitcase Theatre, a theatrical and musical group that performed around the world.
Curtis later graduated from the University of Michigan at Flint in 2000. He has worked on the assembly line at Fisher Body Plant #1 in Flint for 13 years. His first published book was The Watsons Go to Birmingham in 1996 – 1963. It was a runner-up to the Newbury Medal and was named one of the New York Public Library’s 100 Great Children’s Books of the Past 100 Years. His next book was Bud, Not Buddy, published in 1999. The book won the Newbery Medal and the Coretta Scott King Award in 2000. He published Bucking the Sarge in 2004 and Mr. Chickee’s Messy Quest in 2008. His 2007 work Mr. Chickee’s Funny Monkey won a Parents’ Choice Award. In 2007 Buxton’s Elijah won the Coretta Scott Gold Medal and was runner-up for the Newbery Medal.
