John Patrick Alford was born on September 13, 1940 in Melbourne, Victoria, the adopted son of Matthew and Erin Stokes. Stokes’ first job was anything but glamorous, and he is said to have installed antennas in Perth. Eventually he started working in property development and developing shopping centres in Perth and Western Australia with his partners Kevin Merifield and Jack Bendat. More importantly, he became the owner of Australian Capital Equity (ACE), through which he held interests in mining, oil exploration, construction and real estate. In 2007 he formed Coates Hire Ltd from National Hire Ltd after a successful partnership with The Carlyle Group. When it comes to personal life, Stokes went through three marriages before finally settling down with his fourth wife, Christine Simpson. He has four children and currently lives in Perth, Australia.
