Wallace was born on October 12, 1947, to parents Norma Kaphan and Mike Wallace in Chicago, Illinois. He had an older brother named Peter, who died in 1961. Wallace’s parents divorced early, and he was raised by his mother and stepfather Bill Leonard. He attended the Hotchkiss School and then Harvard University. He graduated in 1969 with a BA in History.
