Chris Matthews is an American talk show host, news anchor, political commentator and writer. He is best known for hosting the show “Hardball” on MSNBC and “The Chris Matthews Show” on NBC. His published works include Now, Let me tell you what I really think (2001) and America: Beyond Our Greatest Idea (2002). Christopher John Matthews was born on December 17, 1945 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His parents are Mary Theresa Shields and Herb Matthews. He has four brothers, Herb, Jim, Bruce and Charlie. Matthews graduated from LaSalle College High School in 1963. Received an undergraduate degree from the College of the Holy Cross in 1967. He also studied economics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Matthews began his political career as an assistant to U.S. Senator Frank Moss in the early 1970s. In 1974, he ran for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives as a Democrat, but failed. He was a writer of presidential speeches during the Jimmy Carter administration. From 1981 to 1987, he served as a senior aide to Thomas P. “Tip” O’Neill Jr., Speaker of the House of Representatives.
Matthews started his media career as a print reporter. From 1987 to 2000, he served as the director of the Washington branch of the San Francisco Examiner. He also worked as a columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle for two years. During his tenure, he reported on events such as the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. In 1997, Matthews premiered his iconic talk show on CNBC. The show has been moved to MSNBC since 1999. It airs every Sunday at 7 p.m. Eastern Time for 60 minutes. Matthews hosted “The Chris Matthews Show” on NBC from 2002 to 2013. He is a frequent visitor of “The McLaughlin Group” hosted by John McLaughlin. He has guest appearances in films such as Swing Vote (2008) with Kevin Costner, State of Play (2009) with Russell Crowe and The Campaign (2012) with Will Ferrell ).
