early life
Born on March 4, 1969, Bono was named Chastity Sun Bono. He was born in Los Angeles, California, the only child of Cher and Sonny Bono, then members of the pop duo Sonny & Cher. As a child, Bono appeared on his parents’ TV variety show.

Bono came out as a lesbian in an interview in the April 1995 edition of The Advocate, a national gay magazine. He then wrote “Family Coming Out: A Guide to the Coming Out Process for Gay Men, Lesbians, and Their Families” in 1998, detailing his own coming out process, and for others struggling with it. provided advice and support.
