Charo is a Hispanic singer, guitarist, actor and comedian. In the 1970s, she rose to fame with her Latin flair and trademark phrase “cuchi-cuchi.” Her TV credits include Surreal Life and Chico and the Man. Charo was born Maria Rosario Pilar Martinez Molina Baeza on January 15, 1951 in Murcia, Spain. Her father is a lawyer and her mother is a housewife. She became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1977.

Charo has been learning classical and flamenco guitar since he was a child. She studied with the famous Spanish guitarist Andres Segovia. Charo was discovered by Latin bandleader Xavier Cugat, whom she married in 1966. She followed his orchestra to Las Vegas, where she performed as a singer and dancer. The couple made several appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show in the mid to late 1960s.
Charo started her solo career in the 1970s. She starred alongside Johnny Carson, George Burns, Joy Bishop and several other actors. Her disco albums “La Salsa” and “Flamenco Salsa” were produced by Capitol Records. Charo’s popular songs include “Cuchi Cuchi,” “Stay With Me,” and “Dance a Little Bit Closer.” The album Guitar Passion (1994) went platinum and won her the Female Pop Album of the Year award.
Charo’s film credits include Tiger by the Tail (1968), The Concorde: Airport ’79 (1979) and Moon Over Parador (1988). She produced and starred in the variety show “Tropical Heat” in Hawaii for several years. She appeared on the comedy series Chico and the Man alongside comedian Freddie Prinze. Her television credits also include Love Boat (1977-84), Surreal Life (2004) and Jane the Virgin (2016). Charo has been selected as a contestant on ABC Dancing With the Stars Season 24. Her professional partner is South African dancer Keo Motsepe.
