Charmian Carr is an American actress, singer and businesswoman. She is best known for her role as “Lisel” in the movie The Sound of Music. Carl was born in Charmian Fanon on December 27, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois. Her mother, Rita Oehman, is an actress and her father, Brian Farnon, is a musician. She has four siblings, Sharon, Darleen, Michael and Brian. Carl grew up in Los Angeles and attended San Fernando High School. She plays basketball, volleyball, and is a member of the cheerleading team. She also briefly studied speech therapy and philosophy at San Fernando Valley State College.

Carr made his feature film debut in the 1965 musical The Sound of Music. She was signed by film director Robert Wise to play the role of “Liesl”, the first and eldest child. Carl signed with no prior singing or acting lessons. Other actresses competing for the role include Patty Duke, Geraldine Chaplin and Mia Farrow. The film starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer was a commercial success. It won five Academy Awards, two Golden Globes, and was hailed by the American Film Institute as one of the greatest American films of all time. Carr starred in “Evening Primrose” (1966) and “Rogers and Hammerstein: The Voice of the Movie” (1996). She had guest appearances on the talk show “Loose Women” in 2007 and “The Oprah Winfrey Show” in 2010.
Carr is the founder of California-based interior design firm Charmian Carr Designs. Her notable clients include pop singer Michael Jackson and screenwriter Ernest Reiman. Carr co-authored Forever Liesl (2000) and Letters to Liesl (2001). She also co-hosted the Sing-A-Long Sound of Music for several years, starting in 2000.

Charmian Carr passed away on September 17, 2016 at the age of 73. Her death was reportedly a rare complication of dementia. Carl was married to dentist “Jay Brent” from 1967 to 1991. They have two children, Jennifer and Emily. Her grandsons Emma, Derek, William and Tucker also survived.
