Charlie Murphy is an American actor, comedian and screenwriter. He rose to prominence as an actor and writer on the sketch comedy series Chappelle’s Show. His film credits include Jungle Fever (1991), The King’s Ransom (2005) and The Lottery (2010). Murphy was born Charles Quinton Murphy on July 12, 1959 in Brooklyn, New York. His mother, Lillian, was a telephone operator and his father, Charles, was a traffic officer. He has a brother Eddie Murphy and half-brother Vernon Lynch, Jr. Murphy served six years in the US Navy before starting his entertainment career. From 1978 to 1984, he worked there as a boiler technician.

Before the film, Murphy worked on a number of projects with the hip-hop group “K-9 Posse”. He is credited as executive producer on their 1988 debut studio album. He wrote the singles “Somebody’s Brother” and “Say Who Say What”. Murphy began his acting career with small roles in films such as Harlem Nights (1989) and Jungle Fever (1991). He played the more prominent role of “Gusto” in the 1993 comedy “CB4” starring Chris Rock. He later appeared in Ice Cube’s comedy series The Players Club (1998). Other films include Anthony Anderson’s King’s Ransom (2005), Bow Wow’s Lottery Ticket (2010) and Mike Epps’ Meet the Blacks (2016).
In 2003, Murphy was cast in the comedy sketch “The Chappell Show” with Dave Chappell and Donnell Rollins. He has held various roles and has also worked as a writer. He is probably best known for the skit “The Real Hollywood Story of Charlie Murphy,” in which he recounted his encounters with other celebrities. Murphy on the TBS sitcom Are We Still There? (2010-11). He played Victor “Vic” Hargrove in the comedy series Black Jesus (2014-15). He has also appeared on “1000 Ways to Die,” “Hawaii 5-0” and the “Power” series.
Murphy voiced the character “Ed Wuncler III” on the adult swim TV series The Boondocks (2005-10). He dubbed the series Black Dynamite (2012-14) and the film Norbit (2007). He also voiced “Budweiser” and the video game “Grand Theft Auto”. His screenwriting credits include “The Brooklyn Vampire,” “Paper Soldiers,” and “Charlie Murphy: I Won’t Apologize.”
