Charles Melton, formerly known as Charles Michael Melton, was born on January 4, 1991 in Juneau, Alaska. His mother Su Jing is Korean and his father Phil is American. Phil met Su Kyung while stationed in South Korea while serving in the military, and she moved with him to the United States in 1990. Charles has two younger sisters, Patricia and Tammy, who grew up in military bases including Fort Hood (Texas), Camp Humphreys (South Korea) and Stork Barracks (Germany) . After the family settled in Manhattan, Kansas, Melton attended Manhattan High School. After graduating in 2009, he attended Kansas State University and served as a defensive guard for the Kansas State Wildcats.
