One of the few high-profile value investors today, Mr. Brandes founded his well-known Brandes Investment Partners in 1974. Headquartered in San Diego, California, the company currently has more than $28.9 billion in assets under management, well below $120 billion. It was successfully restored in March 2007.
Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1942, Brandes earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Bucknell University before attending San Diego State University. After graduating, Brandes trained as a stockbroker before he met Ben Graham. Thus, he was able to learn directly from Graham’s technique of identifying undervalued investment securities. In addition to being a successful investor and a CFA charter holder for over 25 years, Charles Brandes has established himself as a great philanthropist. Together with his third wife, Tanya, he founded the Tanya & Charles Brandes Foundation, which supports the San Diego Symphony Orchestra and Elton John’s AIDS Foundation. Not surprisingly, Sir Elton performed at Charles and Tanya’s 2006 wedding.
