Carol Channing is an award-winning American stage actress, comedian and singer. She is best known for the Broadway musicals Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1949) and Hello, Dolly! (1964). Her film credits include Thoroughly Modern Millie (1967) and Skidoo (1968). Carol Elaine Channing was born on January 31, 1921 in Seattle, Washington. Her parents are George and Adelaide. She is an only child. Channing attended Lowell High School in San Francisco and then Bennington College in Vermont. She majored in drama but dropped out before finishing her degree.

Channing made his debut in 1941’s No For an Answer. Later that year, she was cast as Eve Arden’s backup in the Broadway musical “Let’s Face It.” She won a Drama World Award for her role in Lend an Ear (1948). Channing starred in “Lorelei Lee” in the Broadway musical Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1949). It was in this role that she introduced her signature song “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend.” Lorelei’s role was reprised in 1951. She was nominated for a Tony Award for The Vamp (1955) and Show Girl (1961).
Channing’s next big role was “Dolly Levi” on the hit musical Hello, Dolly!. (1964). Her performance won a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical. She was nominated for a Golden Globe and an Oscar for her supporting role in Thoroughly Modern Millie (1967). Channing’s film credits include The First Traveling Saleslady (1956) with Ginger Rogers and Skidoo (1968) with Jackie Gleason. She has appeared on TV shows such as What’s My Line? and The Ed Sullivan Show. She also wrote “Where’s Waldo?” , the Addams Family series, and the animated films Happily Ever After (1993) and Thumbelina (1994).
Channing was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 1981. She received the Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in 1995. Her star was inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame in February 1960. Channing’s autobiography “I Guess Lucky” was published in 2002.
