As the founder and head of Organizacion Ardila Lulle, he turned soda mogul. It is a large conglomerate in Colombia that controls soft drink companies such as RCN TV and Postobon, as well as media companies and the Atletico Nacional football team.
He graduated in civil engineering from the National University of Colombia and started in the soft drinks business as plant manager for Gaseosas LUX. As he climbed the corporate ladder, Ardila Lulle began buying stock in soda-making rival Postobon. Eventually, he became the majority shareholder and in 1968 became president in Postobon, South Africa. Five years later, he purchased a local radio station and went on to acquire many others across Colombia, thereby establishing Radio Cadena Nacional. At the same time, he formed a programming department to produce dramas and news for Colombian government-owned television channels. After the government privatized broadcasting in 1998, he founded the Colombian television station RCN TV, which produced the global hit TV series “Betty La Fea” or “Ugly Betty”. More recently, in 2012, Carlos Ardila Lulle signed a deal with Rupert Murdoch to create a Spanish-language channel for Hispanics in the United States, which would be a competitor to Telemundo and Univision. He also owns Colombia’s largest sugar mill and bottling and packaging stakeholder and has become one of Latin America’s richest men.
