Kara McCullough is an American scientist and beauty pageant champion. In May 2017, she was crowned as Miss America. Kara Deidra McCullough was born in Naples, Italy on September 9, 1991. Her father Artensel E. McCullough Sr. served in the US Marine Corps, and her mother is Betty Ann Parker. As a child of a soldier, she has lived in Japan, Hawaii, South Korea and other places. The family eventually settled in Virginia Beach, Virginia. McCullough graduated from South Carolina State University. She completed a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, majoring in radiochemistry. Before graduating, she served as a member of the American Chemical Society and the Health Physics Society.

McCullough served as the 75th Miss South Carolina State University from 2012 to 2013. Her slogan is “Keep your coins and inspire change.” It helps empower African American women in fields such as engineering, mathematics, and science. McCullough participated in the 2015 and 2016 Miss District of Columbia contests and won the second place. The third time was Charisma. She was crowned Miss District of Columbia 2017 in December 2016. The title was previously held by Deshauna Barber.

McCullough participated and won the 2017 Miss America pageant. Her victory marked the seventh non-American-born champion. The game was held on May 14, 2017 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Other top contenders are Chhavi Verg of New Jersey and Meridith Gould of Minnesota. McCullough’s response to issues involving health care and feminism sparked controversy on social media. She pointed out that affordable medical care for American citizens is a privilege, not a right. McCullough will represent the United States in the 2017 Miss Universe pageant.

In addition to the event, McCullough also served as a physical scientist in the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission. She is also known for creating the outreach program “Science Exploration for Children (SE4K)”. The program provides interactive activities for young children. It also provides math and science tutoring.
