Byron was illiterate until the age of 12 and suffered from a debilitating stutter as a child. Pitts graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1982.
In 1983, he was a weekend sports anchor for WNCT-TV in Greenville, North Carolina. In 1984 he became a military correspondent for WAVY-TV in Portsmouth, Virginia, and in 1986 he became a correspondent for WESH-TV in Orlando, Florida. He worked as a reporter for WFLA-TV in Tampa, Florida in 1988, then went to WCVB-TV in Boston, Massachusetts in 1989. From 1994 to 1996, he was a general assignment reporter in Atlanta, Georgia. He became a reporter for CBS Newspath in 1997 and CBS News in May 1998, first in Miami, then Atlanta, and then in 2001 in New York City. He served as lead reporter covering the September 11, 2011 attacks and won an Emmy. Pitts is also an embedded reporter covering the Iraq War. He has covered Hurricane Katrina, the story of Elian Gonzalez and the refugee crisis in Kosovo. He also won an Emmy for his coverage of the 1999 Chicago Train Wreck and a National Association of Black Journalists Award in 2002. In 2009, he wrote Out of Nothing: How Faith and Family Helped Me Overcome Life’s Challenges. Byron left CBS in March 2013 and currently works for ABC News.
