Buddy Hield is a Bahamian-born professional basketball player currently signed with the New Orleans Pelicans. He’s 6-foot-5 and plays the shooting guard position. He was born Chavano Rainier Hield on December 17, 1993 in Freeport, Bahamas. His parents, Jackie Swann and Vincent Hield, separated when he was eleven. Heard has six siblings, three brothers and three sisters. He attended Jack Hayward High School, where he was named an All Bahamas Brand All Bahamas Pick.

Heard moved to the United States in 2010. He attended Sunrise Christian Academy in Wichita, Kansas. He led the team to the National Christian Athletic Association National Championship with a 24-4 record. As a senior, he averaged 22.7 points and 21 minutes per game.

Hield continued his education and basketball career at the University of Oklahoma. He majored in human relations and played four seasons with the Oklahoma State Transit team from 2012 to 2016. Heard received the Oscar Robertson Trophy and the John R. Worden Award in 2016. He was also named a player of The Sports News and Naismith College. 2016. Hield finished his senior year with averages of 25 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2 assists. He leads the Big 12 in scoring with 2,291 points. He became the second player in history to be named the Big 12 Player of the Year twice (2015, 2016). The first player to accomplish this feat was Raef LaFrentz in 1997 and 1998.

Hield was selected by the New Orleans Pelicans with the sixth overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft.
