Bruce “The Boss” Springsteen is an Oscar-winning rock singer, songwriter, and musician. He played with the backing band the E Street Band. He was born on September 23, 1949 in Long Branch, New Jersey. His mother, Adele, was a legal secretary and his father, Douglas, was a bus driver. He has two younger siblings, Virginia and Pamela. Springsteen grew up in Freehold Borough, where he attended Freehold Regional High School. He took classes at Ocean City Community College but never graduated. Springsteen was drafted into the Vietnam War in 1967. He failed his medical examination and was deemed unfit for military service.

Springsteen drew early inspiration from entertainers such as Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra and The Beatles. He started playing guitar in 1964 and by 1965 was lead guitarist and vocalist for The Castiles. He performed with several other groups including Earth and Steelworks. Springsteen formed the E Street Band in 1972 with Garry Tallent, Clarence Clemons, Danny Federici, Vini Lopez and David Sancious. Signed to Columbia Records, his debut studio album, Greetings from Asbury Park, NJ, was released on January 5, 1973. The album received critical acclaim, with Springsteen being compared to folk singer Bob Dylan. His second album, The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle, was released eight months later to critical acclaim but low sales.
Springsteen shot to fame when he released his third album, Born to Run, in 1975. The album reached number three on the Billboard 200 and has since sold more than 6 million copies in the United States. Springsteen’s seventh album, Born in the USA, was released in 1984 and was a major and commercial success. The album was certified 15× Platinum in the United States and sold over 30 million copies worldwide. Born in the USA features seven top 10 hits and ranks among the best-selling albums of all time. Other albums include The River (1980), Tunnel of Love (1987) and most recently Wrecking Ball (2012) and High Hopes (2014). Springsteen has won 20 Grammys, 2 Golden Globes and 1 Oscar. He was inducted into the Composers Hall of Fame and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999.
