He was born on June 18, 1963, where he grew up and attended school. After completing his statewide high school football career, he was admitted to Virginia Tech on an athletic scholarship and ended his college career as the most respected player in Hokie history. He played in 19 NFL seasons, totaling 279 games, 200 sacks, 2 interceptions, 46 forced turnovers and 15 fumble recoveries. He had at least 10 sacks in 13 of his 19 seasons in professional football, and Smith was named an All-Pro 9 times throughout his career. After retiring from football, he returned to Virginia and currently lives in Virginia Beach. Smith is now a major hospitality designer and has worked on numerous projects with Armada Hoffler. He is a Baptist and a member of Queen Street Baptist Church in Norfolk. He and his wife Carmen have a son named Alston.
