He founded the bus and rail operator Stagecoach Group with his sister Ann Gloag. He also founded bus and coach operator Megabus, train operating company South West Trains, his investment companies Souter Holdings Ltd and Souter Charitable Trust.
Stagecoach Group is headquartered in Perth, Scotland with operations in the UK, US and Canada. Souter has been politically active in Scotland and supports the SNP financially. In 2000, when the Scottish government proposed repealing Section 2A of the Local Government Act to prevent local authorities from promoting homosexuality, Souter launched a “reservation clause” campaign against their plans, and he organised a private Scottish referendum at £1m at his own expense . The campaign and other controversial remarks have led opponents to accuse him of being homophobic. In 2011, Souter was knighted for service in the transport and voluntary sectors, an honour criticised by Scottish Labour politicians and gay rights activists. In August 2012, it was announced that Souter would become Chairman of Stagecoach Group on May 1, 2013, and Chief Financial Officer Martin Griffiths would succeed Souter as CEO. In 1992, Sutter and his wife established the Souter Charitable Trust to help humanitarian projects in the UK and overseas, particularly but not limited to those with a Christian focus. Projects include preventing malaria and providing daily meals for African schoolchildren. Sir Brian Souter was inducted into the UK Tourism and Hospitality Hall of Fame on 18 April 2012, becoming the first public transport entrepreneur to receive this honour.
