After being selected by the New York Rangers with the ninth overall pick in the 1986 NHL draft, he played for Boston College and the U.S. Olympic team before making his NHL debut.

Leach has played for the Rangers, Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins. He played for 18 years until his retirement in 2006. During his career from 1990 to 2003, Leetch played in 10 NHL All-Star games. He is considered one of the best blue-liners in the game. Leach was named the Rangers MVP six times. He received the 2001 Frank Boucher Award and the Seyle Seidel Memorial Award in 2002 and 2003. Leetch also received the Player of the Player Award, the Steven MacDonald Extra Effort Award and the Crumboom Award. The Rangers retired his jersey in a February 2008 ceremony. He holds multiple NHL records, including the most goals scored by a rookie guard with 23 goals in 1998-89, and the first American-born player to win the Cosmopolitan Trophy in 1994. In 2009, Leach was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
