Brenda Blethyn was born Brenda Anne Bottle in Ramsgate, Kent, England in 1946, the youngest of nine children. Before her acting career, Blethyn worked at a local bank, and it wasn’t until the 1970s that she started performing at the Royal National Theatre in London.
Blethyn gained notoriety as a stage actress for the next decade, winning the London Critics Circle Theatre Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1980 for her role in Steam. It wasn’t long before she started taking on screen roles in British TV shows such as “Million Chance” and “Yes Minister”. She played Erica Parsons in the 1989 TV series Erica’s Labour. A year later, Blessing made his big-screen debut in The Witches, an adaptation of Roald Dahl’s book. In 1996, she was critically acclaimed for her role in Secrets and Lies, winning Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival, a British Academy Award and a Golden Globe.
