Pitt was born William Bradley Pitt on December 18, 1963, in Shawnee, Oklahoma. His mother Jane was a high school counselor and his father William owned a trucking company. He has two younger siblings, a brother named Douglas and a sister named Julie. Pete grew up in Springfield, Missouri, and attended Kickup High School. He studied journalism at the University of Missouri, but dropped out to pursue acting.
