Profession
Boutros Boutros-Ghali expanded his political career during Anwar El Sabat’s presidency. In 1977, he was appointed Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of Egypt. He was a leading member of Egypt’s National Democratic Party in the 1980s. He also represented in the Egyptian Parliament. In 1991, Boutros-Ghali was promoted to Deputy Prime Minister for International Affairs by President Hosni Mubarak. As he was invited to become a member of the UN’s political arm, he only held a short-term position. In 1991, he became the sixth Secretary-General of the United Nations.
As head of the United Nations, Boutros Boutros-Ghali became an important promoter of international peace. He promoted the idea that nations could come together to solve problems peacefully rather than using weapons. During the Cold War (US and USSR) he was a very prominent figure. As a result, he gained a global reputation as a practitioner of internationalism. Boutros-Ghali is not only focusing on building the country, but also putting a lot of energy into strengthening the political machinery of the United Nations. He sets many common-sense goals and asks his peers to achieve them. However, some of his reforms are not suitable for Western countries, including the United States. He did not choose a second term. His successor is Kofi Annan.
