Robert Foster Bennett is a U.S. Senator and a member of the Republican Party. He was born in Francis and Wallace in Salt Lake City, Utah on September 18, 1933. Bennett attended East High School, followed by the University of Utah. He graduated in 1957 with a bachelor’s degree in political science.
Profession
Before entering politics, Bennett served in the Utah Army National Guard and later served as a chaplain. In 1962, he started working for his father’s re-election campaign, and by 1963 he served as the press secretary for Sherman P. Lloyd, a member of Congress. Bennett later served as Director of Congressional Affairs in the Nixon administration, where he served until 1971. He was involved in business and established contacts with Robert Mullen Company, Summa Corporation and Hughes Airwest. Other commercial enterprises include Osmond Communications, American Computer Corporation and Microsonics Corporation. From 1984 to 1991, he served as the CEO of Franklin Quest.
Bennett served as the U.S. Senator from 1993 to 2011. The Senate seat was previously held by Republican Jack Garn, who decided not to run for the fourth term. Bennett was re-elected in 1998 in 1998 and re-elected in 2004. He held the fourth semester in 2010, but was defeated by Mike Lee of the Republic. During his tenure, Bennett opposed abortion and issued marriage certificates to same-sex couples. He is a staunch supporter of the flat tax and voted against an increase in the minimum wage. He was severely criticized by the Tea Party movement for supporting the Bush administration’s bank bailout.
