Bob Barker is an American retired game show host, television personality and animal rights activist. He is known for hosting the game shows “The Price Is Right” and “Truth or Consequence.” His credits also include “The End of the Rainbow” and “That’s My Line.” Barker was born Robert William Barker on December 12, 1923, in Darlington, Washington. His mother, Matilda Kent Tarleton, was a teacher. His father, Byron John Barker, died in 1929. Buck’s mother remarried and the family moved to Springfield, Missouri. There, he attended Central High School, followed by Drury College. He graduated in 1947 with a bachelor’s degree in economics. He also trained as a U.S. Navy fighter pilot during World War II.

Buck debuted on the radio station “KTTS-FM” in Springfield, Missouri. He worked briefly at another radio station in Florida before moving to California in 1950. He hosted his own radio show, The Bob Barker Show, for six years outside of Burbank. Buck was hired by NBC in 1956. He hosted the game shows Truth or Aftermath (1956-74), Rainbow’s End (1957-58), Family Games (1967), Simon Says (1971) and That’s My Line (1980-1981). He also hosted the Miss Universe and Miss America pageants several times from 1967 to 1987.
Buck began hosting “The Price Is Right” for CBS in September 1972. The game show was created by Bob Stewart, Mark Goodson and Bill Todman. Contestants are tasked with guessing the prices of various products to win cash and prizes. Buck hosted the show from 1972 to 2007. Drew Carey succeeded him. Buck hosted the annual New Year’s Rose Parade Championship from 1969 to 1988. He starred in the sports comedy film Happy Gilmore (1996) starring Adam Sandler. His TV credits include Something So Right, Futurama and Family Guy.
Buck has won 19 Emmy Awards, 14 of them for Outstanding Game Show Host. In 1999, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award for daytime television. He was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 2004 and the NAB Broadcasting Hall of Fame in 2008. In 1976, Buck’s star was inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Other honors include the GSN Lifetime Achievement Award and Time Magazine’s Greatest Game Show Host of All Time. His autobiography, Priceless Memories, was published in 2009.
