William Edwards Crystal was born on March 14, 1948 in the Upper East Side of Manhattan. Although he originally grew up in the Bronx, his family moved to Long Island when he was a toddler. After graduating from high school in Long Beach, Billy went to West Virginia to enter Marshall University with a baseball scholarship. There, he got closer to his future wife Janice and studied acting in HB Studio. While studying acting, he attended Nassau Community College before transferring to New York University.
While at New York University, Crystal studied film and television directors, and in 1970 graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts (later renamed the Tisch Academy of Fine Arts) with a bachelor’s degree. During this time, Christo studied under Martin Scorsese and studied with Oliver Stone and Christopher Guest.

Billy Crystal started his career on stage as a comedian in New York City. Soon, he became famous in comedy clubs throughout the city and began to appear on TV shows such as “Saturday Night Live” and “Jay Leno’s Tonight Show”. In this early period, he also appeared in several TV game shows. When he played the unapologetically gay character Judy Dallas in the popular sitcom “Soap”, his first important role appeared.
