Bill Cunningham is an American fashion photographer who has worked for The New York Times for nearly 40 years. He often rides his bike in his signature blue jacket. Cunningham was born William J. Cunningham Jr. on March 13, 1929, in Boston, Massachusetts. He grew up in an Irish Catholic family with two sisters and an older brother. He briefly attended Harvard University before dropping out. In 1948, he moved to New York to work in Bonwit Teller’s advertising department. He also served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
Profession
After a brief stint in college, Cunningham made and sold hats under the name “William J.” His store serving upper-class women closed in 1962. He also worked in a Manhattan clothing store whose celebrity clients included Marilyn Monroe, Katharine Hepburn and Jacqueline Kennedy. Cunningham has contributed to several publications including Women’s Wear Daily, Vogue, and the Chicago Tribune. He worked on the “Facade” project from 1968 to 1976. The façade is a visual project linking fashion to Manhattan’s structural landmarks.
Cunningham began his long tenure at The New York Times in the 1970s. Before taking a full-time position in 1993, he contributed hundreds of photographs to The New York Times. He is known for his photo columns “Evening Hours” and “Street”. Cunningham was named Photographer of the Year by the Council of Fashion Designers of America in 1983. In 2009, he was named a “Living Landmark” by the New York Landmark Preservation Society. The documentary “New York Bill Cunningham” was released in 2010. It is directed by Richard Press and produced by Philip Gofft.
