Bill Cosby is an American actor, comedian, producer and writer. He is best known for the NBC sitcom The Cosby Show (1984-92). His credits include The Electric Company, Fat Albert and Cosby Kids, and Different Worlds. He created the fictional character “Fat Albert”. Cosby was born William Henry Cosby, Jr. on July 12, 1937, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His mother, Anna Pearl, was a maid, and his father, William Henry Cosby Sr., served in the U.S. Navy. He had three younger brothers, Russell, Robert and James (d. 1947). Cosby received his bachelor’s degree from Temple University (1971), his master’s degree and his doctorate in education from the University of Massachusetts (1973, 1976). From 1982 to 2014, he served on the Temple University Board of Trustees.

Cosby started his stand-up career in San Francisco nightclubs. His TV debut was on the NBC adventure series My Spy. He was cast as “Alexander Scott” alongside Kelly Robinson (played by Robert Culp). His film credits include Saturday Night Uptown (1974) with Sidney Poitier, California Suite (1978) with Alan Alda, and The Devil and Max Devlin (1981) with Elliott Gould.
Cosby has won a seven-time Grammy for Best Comedy Album. His comedy albums include I Started Out as a Child (1965), Why Is There Air? (1966), Wonderful (1967) and Revenge (1968). He won a Grammy for Best Children’s Recording for The Electric Company (1971) and Bill Cosby Talks to Kids About Drugs (1972). He received the Mark Twain Award for American Humor in 2009.
