Born May 13, 1982 in Washington, D.C., he was a linebacker for the championship team Sheffield Wednesday and the U.S. national team. Onyewu played college football for two years at Clemson University (South Carolina) before moving to Europe in 2002, where he signed with Ligue 2’s Metz in France.
He went on to play for La Louvière in Belgium and a year later for Standard Liege. In December 2006, he was voted America’s Soccer Player of the Year, the first guard to win the award since Alexis Laras in 1995.
