DaBaby was born Jonathan Lyndale Kirk on December 22, 1991 in Cleveland, Ohio. The youngest of three sons, the family moved to Charlotte, North Carolina in 1999. DaBaby graduated from Vance High School in 2010 and then spent two years at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Talking about his college experience, he said: “When I went to college, I didn’t even have a major, I just went to school for my parents.” DaBaby’s father died in 2019, and his brother Glenn died in 2020 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Originally releasing music under the name Baby Jesus, DaBaby started his musical career in 2015 when he released the mixtape “Nonfiction”. He released two more that year, “So Disrespectful” and “10 Minute Mixtape,” followed by “God’s Work” and “God’s Work Resurrection” in 2016. The big baby has two daughters. His ex-girlfriend, MeMe, is the mother of his eldest daughter, who has a son, Caleb, from a previous relationship, whom DaBaby calls “the eldest of my 3.” Speaking of religion, he said: “I’m lucky. I’m covered in the blood of Christ.” In 2018, while DaBaby and his family were shopping at a Walmart in Huntersville, North Carolina, two men with weapons approached took him. An altercation ensued and one of the men, 19-year-old Jalyn Craig, died from a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Dababi confirmed he was involved in the shooting and said security camera footage would show him in self-defense. In June 2019, he was convicted of possession of a concealed firearm and sentenced to a year of unsupervised probation. In early 2020, he was questioned during a robbery investigation in Miami after his staff allegedly robbed and assaulted a music promoter who owed DaBaby $10,000. They reportedly stole $80, a credit card and an iPhone 7. Miami authorities arrested DaBaby after discovering he had a warrant in Texas for charging his battery. He was charged with battery charges in connection with the Miami robbery, but he was released from prison after 48 hours.
In 2020, DaBaby slapped a female fan when she took the stage at a concert in Tampa, Florida, causing boos from the crowd. He left the venue without singing a song, and he later said he slapped the woman because her phone was too close to his face while he was recording with the flash on.
