Born in Kenya in 1952 and raised in India, Desai is the founder of Syntel, an American multinational provider of integrated technology and business services. After graduating from Bombay Institute of Technology in India, he moved to the United States in 1976 to work as a programmer at Tata Consultancy Services.
A few years later, while he was still pursuing his MBA at the University of Michigan, Desai and his then-fiancee, Neerja Sethi, started Syntel as a $2,000 self-employed business. The company went public in 1997 and currently employs more than 21,000 people worldwide. In 2009, Desai stepped down as chief executive but remained chairman. In addition, Desai has received many prestigious awards, including the 1996 USA Today and Nasdaq Entrepreneur of the Year and the 1999 Harvard University Entrepreneur Award. He also serves on the boards of many educational institutions, such as Free Enterprise Students, the Stephen M. Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan, and the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
