Betsy DeVos is an American politician, entrepreneur, philanthropist and the 11th U.S. Secretary of Education. She is the chairman of the Windquest Group and a past chairman of the Michigan Republican Party. DeVos was born Elizabeth Prince on January 8, 1958 in Holland, Michigan. Her parents are Elsa and Prince Edgar. She has three siblings, Emilie, Eileen and Erik. DeVos attended Holland Christian High School, followed by Calvin College. She graduated in 1979 with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Business Administration.

DeVos began her political career in the late 1970s. She volunteered for President Gerald R. Ford in 1976 and served on the Michigan Republican National Committee from 1992 to 1998. DeVos was elected as chairman of the Michigan Republican Party in 1996. She held that office from 1996 to 2000 and from 2003 to 2005. During his tenure, DeVos has focused his attention on educational options and reform. She has also played an important role in various social, cultural and political movements.
In 1989, DeVos and her husband co-founded the Windquest Group. The group invests in innovative companies ranging from technology to clean energy. The couple also founded the Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation in 1989. They have supported many causes, including the Children’s Federation of America, Western Michigan Aviation Academy, and ArtPrize.
DeVos was nominated by George W. Bush to serve on the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Board of Directors. She held this position from 2004 to 2010. She serves on the boards of the Philanthropy Roundtable, the Great Lakes Education Project, and the DeVos School of Arts Administration. DeVos was nominated by President Donald Trump to be Secretary of Education. She was sworn in on February 7, 2017.
