Bernie Sanders is an independent politician, U.S. Senator, and 2016 presidential candidate. Before joining the Democratic Party in 2015, he served as an independent for 36 years. He was born on September 8, 1941 in Eli and Dorothy Sanders in Brooklyn, New York. He attended James Madison High School and served as the captain of the track team. He attended Brooklyn College, but transferred to the University of Chicago after his freshman year. Received a bachelor’s degree in political science in 1964. During his college years, he was an active member of the “Socialist Youth League” and the “Race Equality Conference”. Before moving to Vermont, he lived in a kibbutz in Israel for several months.

Sanders was elected Mayor of Burlington, Vermont in 1981, a position he would hold for four consecutive terms. He often described himself as a democratic socialist. He served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1991 to 2007, and chaired the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee from 2013 to 2015. Sanders assumed the office of the U.S. Senate on January 3, 2007. He re-opted for the second semester in 2012. On April 30, 2015, he announced his candidacy for president as a member of the Democratic Party.
